Where Literature Becomes Legacy

Our Story

Over 125 years of distinguished literary publishing in London

Founded 1897

In the gaslit streets of Victorian London, Marcus Aurelius Thornwell founded what would become one of the English-speaking world's most distinguished literary houses. With a passion for exceptional writing and a belief that books should be treasured objects, Aurelius Press opened its doors on Bloomsbury Street in 1897. The press took its name from the Roman Stoic philosopher, reflecting Thornwell's commitment to timeless wisdom and artistic integrity.
The first edition published was a slim volume of poetry by the then-unknown Constance Whitley. Though it sold modestly, critics recognized the distinctive aesthetic that would define Aurelius Press: careful typography, luxurious materials, and an uncompromising editorial vision. By 1902, the press had published fifteen titles, many of which would achieve canonical status in English literature.
Through two world wars, economic depression, and the digital revolution, Aurelius Press has remained faithful to its founding vision: to publish literature of enduring merit and to treat each book as a work of art. We have rejected the temptation toward commercialism that compromises editorial standards, instead building a reputation based on discernment, craft, and an intimate knowledge of our authors' work.

Our Mission & Vision

Guiding Principles
Mission: To discover, develop, and publish literature of the highest artistic and intellectual merit, ensuring that exceptional voices reach discerning readers while maintaining the physical beauty and durability of the book itself.
Vision: In an age of digital noise and mass-market mediocrity, we envision Aurelius Press as a refuge for serious literature and a sanctuary for writers whose work deserves more than algorithmic distribution. We believe that literature has the power to transform consciousness and that this sacred role demands absolute integrity in editorial judgment.
