Frequently Asked Questions
We prioritize editorial excellence over commercial expedience. With over 125 years of heritage, we maintain rigorous standards for every book we publish. Our commitment to physical beauty—paper quality, typography, binding—ensures your book becomes a treasured object, not a disposable product. We treat each author as a long-term partner in a shared vision of literary legacy.
From accepted manuscript to publication typically takes 12-18 months. This timeline allows for thorough editorial development, meticulous design, and careful printing. We never rush the process—quality cannot be hurried. Expedited timelines are available upon request for an additional fee.
Yes. We welcome submissions from authors both represented by literary agents and unrepresented writers. Submit through our manuscript portal with a brief query letter, author bio, and the first 50 pages. We review all submissions carefully and respond within 8-12 weeks. We cannot accept simultaneous submissions.
Our focus is literary fiction, poetry, narrative non-fiction, memoir, history, philosophy, and essays. We do not publish genre fiction (romance, mystery, fantasy) unless it demonstrates exceptional literary merit. Each submission is evaluated on the quality of writing and originality of vision, regardless of category.
Our editors provide detailed feedback on structure, character, voice, and prose clarity. Authors are not required to implement all suggestions—we respect your artistic vision. However, we do require that certain structural issues be addressed before publication. The editorial process is a collaboration, not a directive.
Print royalties are 10% of net receipts, with digital royalties at 25%. Annual accounting occurs each June. Authors receive quarterly sales reports. Advances are offered to authors with strong market potential, negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Absolutely. We work regularly with literary agents and respect the agent-author relationship. Agency contracts typically stipulate agent representation for domestic US/UK rights. We communicate directly with agents regarding contract terms, editorial process, and marketing strategy.
Yes. We maintain relationships with distributors and independent bookshops across Europe, North America, and Australia. We also manage digital distribution globally through major online retailers. International rights can be managed individually or bundled depending on your preferences.
We coordinate book launch events, literary festival appearances, author readings at independent bookshops, and media outreach. Legacy and Immortal tier authors receive dedicated marketing campaign planning. We work with you to identify optimal promotional venues and target audiences for your work.
Our design team typically recommends typography based on your genre and aesthetic vision. We work primarily with serif typefaces—Garamond, Bembo, Caslon—for their timeless elegance. Author input is welcomed, but final design decisions rest with our design director to maintain our quality standards.
